Where does the name Masdevallia come from? Masdevallias are my favorite family (genus) of orchids that come from Central America, with most of them growing up in cloud forests high in the Andes. They’re a family of miniature orchids with many leaves that push out beautiful exotic single flowers, but only if you understand how to take care of them.
Most houseplants don’t require any special knowledge to keep healthy. You know they need sunlight, water, fertilizer, and there can be a little artistry to giving them the right space in your house to reach for the light and mature, but you don’t need to learn the differences between ferns, ficus, philodendrons, or most of your other choices. You can treat them all the same and they’ll likely do just fine. In fact, you’re hoping you can treat them all the same because that’ll make things a lot easier for you. I fear a lot of individual investors get treated that way. Instead of being listened to when they go in for professional help, they have advisors try to fit them into a standard portfolio filled with investments too complex to understand, with different risk profiles than they would choose for themselves if they really understood it.
I’m committed to treating my clients the way I do my Masdevallias. I’m going to learn about each one of you and what your needs are to treat you accordingly. I learn about each species I have and make sure it’s one of the hot growing species that live down by the coast that can handle hot summer days that would cause most of their cool growing brethren from the mountains to perish. For my clients, I will learn about each of your histories and try to understand where you come from so I know how to help you go to the next stage of your life.
I grow them on wooden slabs instead of having them in pots, because they like having the extra air around their roots and many of their species have flower spikes that go down below their leaves to make it easier for their pollinators to find them. Because they grow on wood boards instead of pots they need to be watered much more frequently. I’ll water them about 5 days a week and the extra attention is exactly what they need to do well. I also give my clients a lot more attention than most advisors do. I make monthly contact when I send email statements or call if you prefer. I advise how your portfolio did and how well the overall market did in the prior month, advising if any of your investments started behaving outside the plan’s design. I want you engaged in the process as much as possible so you can feel in control of your financial destiny and appreciate the results.
So why is Masdevallia Financial Advisor Services the place that small investors thrive? In me, you’ll have an advisor who learns who you are and gives you and your portfolio the time needed to flourish. I can’t promise you will always have up years, but when your investments are matched to your goals you’re going to have the maximum opportunities to succeed.
